It took a little convincing via my friends on Twitter to even compose this post. You see I have these self-imposed rules about what I blog about, and well frankly, politics is against the rules, alongside, my personal life, and by personal,I mean very personal, such as conversations I have with my spouse and other intimate matters.
But, today, which will probably go down in history for much bigger reasons I'm sure than my blogging about politics, I am feel very opinionated and excited about the one thing I have always shied away from, politics. That is because today, I finally have something in common with someone in the news, someone running for election. That someone is a mom, she's bold, obviously determined, and she takes a stand for her beliefs, including being Pro-life. I can relate to this woman, which is a first in anything political. You see though I'm not a card carrying anything like some of my friends were stating they were, I do have deep convictions and grounded beliefs and those things are important to me, family values and pro-life being part of those things.
So, today, I got interested in politics, today I will actually state my opinion on something political, today, I believe is very historical, and yes, I believe it is orchestrated by God. After all, He is the one who is ultimately in control, whether we want to admit it or not and whether we give Him credit or not.
I believe that in order for America to be woken up, in order for America to come back to those things upon which it was founded, that something big had to happen, that something, quite possibly could be this day in history and the possibility of a woman in the White House. It surely has gotten everyone's attention if nothing else, right?
Most likely, there are others out there who share my opinion, and then, well honestly there are those who don't. Some of you agree that this is exciting, that the possibility of a mom in power in America is a good thing for a change, while others of you think it's crazy.
But, just think about it, whether you are of either opinion. Moms are natural managers. We already manage the most important things in America, families. We manage to multi-task our way into getting everything done in a household, from getting the bills paid to getting the bellies of our family members filled, from keeping our kids clothed, to making sure that they learn and grow in a healthy and safe environment. We were created to handle these things, and while I do not believe that we are the heads of our households, no that job is Biblical meant to be for a man, I do believe we are given the position to be second in command, backing up that man. In this same way, Palin, will be backing up McCain, neat concept huh?
So, whatever happens in this year's election, they have accomplished one thing, they got a young mom, who always stayed away from politics, interested and willing to share her opinion, and she is interested because someone much like her has a chance to make her opinion count, just think what could happen if she actually got elected.

Regardless of what side of the political fence a person is on, I think we can all agree on one thing and that's that something's got to change. America as a whole just can't live like this anymore.
I truly wish that things like race and gender weren't an issue but they are and they probably will be for at least another generation or two. But on the plus side, the fact that we have an African-American Presidential nominee and a female VP candidate says a lot about how far we've come.
And good for you for stepping out of your comfort zone! Any time we take a chance like this, we grow from it.
Alyssa, I really do respect your taking this position and breaking your own rules and writing this blog post. I am happy that you are not in a box about it.
I am excited about this election because the further apart democrats and republicans are the more robust the conversation and my hope is that it gets people thinking.
I am a very strong christian as you are and I am a democrat. I do not believe that being pro life is something that we should let the government determine. I am not ashamed to say that God, forbid, if I were raped today, and I somehow got pregnant, I would not keep the child. That is my free will at work. I know that there are major preachers that were the product of a rape and God can use anyone born under any circumstances. But if God, gives me a choice to take whatever action I want to, then who is man to stop me in this instance.
I do not want pro life to be a stance the government takes, it should be a stance that I take as an individual. However, someone else is free to make their own decision as they see fit.
Sometimes, I think as Christians, we think we should vote a certain way or do something because it is the Christian thing to do. Would Jesus have been a proponent of pro choice legislation? I do not think so! If he did not interfere with divorce then why this.
As Christians, I think our energy should go into making adoptions a lot easier. You see a war against a war, is still a war. What are we doing to stop unwanted pregnancies and give easy options.
The truth of the matter is that teenagers go through abortions because we, the Christians, condemn them for not managing their libido through abstinence. Yet God gave them that libido.
I am concerned about Palin. This is why. She has five kids and she just had a baby. Can she help run the country effectively? What happens if something happens to McCain?
Now, I am conflicted about this. Whether she is a democrat or a republican, how do you have five children and take a job that is not just a nine to five job? Her husband is not a stay at home dad?
I believe in having it all but I question these priorities.
Anyway, that is my perspective. Nevertheless, I am glad you wrote your post.
God Bless you,
Iyabo Asani

My comment is on how articulate, well written, well stated this post is - and with God's heart and mine for life.
I only wish I'd written it :-)
My husband called me as soon as he saw on the news who McCain picked as a running mate, I am disappointed that I didn't get to see the speach, but I am told she is a married mother of 5, with a son in Iraq fighting for our country. GO GIRL GO.
I'm sure her husband might be able to stay home when she take the VP job, don't you?
I myself am not a political person by nature, but have tried to stay current with this election due to the state of the world!
Pro-life should be the Christian way, isn't already illegal to kill someone. Why is it okay just because it's a baby?
It always seems ironic to me that we Christians think of pro-life as only being about abortion, and forget that stopping wars in the world is very pro-life, as is eradicating poverty from our planet and being environmentally conscientious. Over 2000 verses in the Bible have to do with poverty and justice. I think it's time that we broadened our view of pro-life, opened our eyes to the bigger world, and just what "love your neighbor" means for all followers of Christ.
Good post ,especially your first political one. Kudos to you for coming out of comfort zone.
Since the announcement I've heard lots of things about McCain's choice. I personally like it, I think its a very smart move.
My question is why because she's a woman and mom of 5, that people don't think she'll be able to handle it. I bet if she was a MAN who was a father of 5, that wouldn't be a big deal! Why is that? In my house, my husband and I are equal partners in parenting and household management. When he is out of town (or the country) on Army missions, I pick up the slack. When I'm on a business trip, he does. I'm sure this will be the case as well, that her husband will pick up where he is needed.
Also, Would we be asking these questions if she was a CEO of a Fortune 500 company? (yes I know there is a big difference between VP and CEO but you get my point)
Well, I am a Dem and I would never vote for her but I am happy to see a woman VP...to bad it is a gimmick to sway unhappy Clinton supporters to the other side. I am with Iyabo, we should not legislate morality and religous ideals...even God gives us the choice...so too should men. I am pro-life even and I will still vote for people's rights to choose their own path. Palin supports the war too so how can she be called pro-life when war is killing ...that one leaves me scratching my head.
Nice post, and I am glad you were able to come out of your comfort zone and share your thoughts.
I like Palin as a VP pick. I doubt McCain picked her to get Hillary supporters, because I doubt very many of them would cross the party line anyway. I see this more as a pick to sway Independents (like myself) and to appeal to women and mothers.
For whatever reason he picked her, it does show that he thought about his pick, and he is interested in women and mothers. It is also exciting to me that this is helping break down the glass ceiling. But, the double standard still is there. Some mothers think she is crazy for taking all this on, especially with a baby. But if it was a man, no one would even bring this up. As a mother of five, I can only assume she loves her children, and would not be taking this on, if she thought it would harm her family. Maybe she plans to bring her baby (or does) to work with her- now that would be another step in the right direction!
No matter who wins the election it is exciting that we will either have a first woman vice president or a black African American president.
I'm glad because she's a woman. I am concerned, though that she has financial ties with the oil industry, and that she's anti choice. Don't get me wrong, abortion is bad but I do not want a government that's involved in it. IMHO God is ALWAYS in control and when a woman makes that decision, God is with her, too. I disagree with it every time, but it's not my job to pass judgment. And I don't want a government that makes decisions about people's bodies.
I agree with anne, and I too find this choice intriguing.
I personally would never have an abortion myself (I am female, regardless of my moniker).
However, I believe the best way to end abortion, which isn't mentioned in Scripture anywhere, is to make sure people understand how to prevent pregnancy if it is unwanted.
For me, to be truly pro-life is to abide the command to love our neighbors as ourselves. Truly. That's why it's part of what is known as the Great Commandment.
" I believe it is orchestrated by God. After all, He is the one who is ultimately in control, whether we want to admit it or not and whether we give Him credit or not."
REALLY? He's in control of Bush going to war with Iraq, the fact that abortion was made legal by the Supreme Court, the fact that Bin Laden was able to destroy the WTC? If he's so in control and can be given credit for the VP nomination, then why stop there? You can't pick and choose what your god is in control of, and for a god with omnipotent powers who can intervene for the VP nomination of a country with only 17% or so of the world population and not intervene for the German Jews or the African genocides then I would go looking for a better god.
Anonymous, thank you for posting here but I do not support you coming here to attack an opinion you do not believe in. Sure you can share and make a point but please let us all be respectful of one another.
I agree with your point though which is this: I think we Christians get it very wrong. I may be wrong but somehow I get the impression that we want to sit back and let God take control and direct everything. Yet Adam was given the instruction to take dominion of the land.
Being proactive is our Christian mandate. Yes God is still soverign but he gave us the free will to be proactive.

"I am concerned, though that she has financial ties with the oil industry, and that she's anti choice."
Just so you know, you are incorrect about Palin having "financial ties" to the oil industry. One of the big things about Palin's governorship was that she was all about breaking up the corruption that allowed oil companies to have the run of Alaska.
Well-written post, and boy, could I really comment on your post and all the comments thus far... but I won't say too much.
Suffice it to say that I WILL vote for McCain/Palin for a variety of reasons.
I feel like Obama talks of change, but he never says exactly how he will accomplish change that matters.
